William Álvarez
Sociologist and visual ethnographer blending research with striking imagery.
About Me
I identify as an urban and visual ethnographer with a PhD in Sociology. My academic journey has taken me through research experiences at the University of Toronto (Canada) and Leiden University (Netherlands). I currently work as a senior researcher at the Observatorio del Caribe Colombiano and as a Wenner-Gren Hunt Postdoctoral Fellow. Over the past decade, I have conducted long-term ethnographic research across Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, and Brazil, focusing on the everyday lives of marginalized populations in the Global South.

My Work
My work explores the intersections between violence, migration, illegal economies, and inequality, particularly in urban peripheries and border regions such as the Darién. I combine immersive ethnography with visual and participatory methods, moving between academic research and storytelling through photography, exhibitions, and documentary projects. My publications and visual work have received international recognition, and I am currently developing a book and audiovisual projects that examine survival, mobility, and the politics of life in contexts of extreme vulnerability.
